Discerning of spirits

DISCERNMENT

is one of the many gifts that we received from the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:10 (NRSV) to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

In 1Corinthians 12:10, discernment is the divinely enabled ability to distinguish a good spirit from a bad spirit. It is a manifestation of the Spirit, which is to be utilized to edify the church. Spiritual discernment is not a function of the mind; it’s a function of the spirit. . . . The Spirit helps us know what cannot be objectively verified.

We need to discern the spiritual source of teachings coming through supposed evangelical Christians. If we simply used the objective tools given us in the Bible the deception in the church today would find no audience. The falsely “prophesying ones” talk on Christian airwaves, speak in Christian pulpits, and write Christian books. They are not discerned to be of another spirit by their outward appearance, their affiliations, their pedigree or the number of their followers. We have what we need: the Holy Spirit (the Bible) for discerning spirits. The Holy Spirit will tell us if the “prophesying ones” are from God.

Philippians 1:9 (NKJV) And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment,

How can you tell a false prophet, false teacher and even a false Christ? I don’t think we could with our own human understanding. According to the word of God we are to test all teaching. But how do you know or how do you expose those that are faults?

1 John 4:1 – 6 (TMSG) 1My dear friends, don’t believe everything you hear. Carefully weigh and examine what people tell you. Not everyone who talks about God comes from God. There are a lot of lying preachers loose in the world. 2Here’s how you test for the genuine Spirit of God. Everyone who confesses openly his faith in Jesus Christ—the Son of God, who came as an actual flesh-and-blood person—comes from God and belongs to God. 3And everyone who refuses to confess faith in Jesus has nothing in common with God. This is the spirit of antichrist that you heard was coming. Well, here it is, sooner than we thought! 4My dear children, you come from God and belong to God. You have already won a big victory over those false teachers, for the Spirit in you is far stronger than anything in the world. 5These people belong to the Christ-denying world. They talk the world’s language and the world eats it up. 6But we come from God and belong to God. Anyone who knows God understands us and listens. The person who has nothing to do with God will, of course, not listen to us. This is another test for telling the Spirit of Truth from the spirit of deception. God Is Love

Prophecy has a spiritual source. When John tells us not to believe every “spirit” (1John 4:1), it is because many false “prophets” have gone out into the world. The spiritual source speaks through a human spokesperson. Thus if someone claims to speak for God and is giving spiritual teaching, we must determine whether or not the teaching is from the Holy Spirit or a deceiving spirit.

This is the essence of the discerning of spirits. Prophecy is to be carefully put to the test to see if it is from God. This type of testing is objective. The word dokimazo (to test, examine, prove, scrutinise (to see whether a thing is genuine or not), as metals to recognize as genuine after examination, to approve, deem worthy) we need to know if people claiming to speak for God are indeed doing so. Nothing could be more foreign to Paul’s teaching in 1Thessalonians than uncritically accepting religious teaching for subjective reasons. But this is exactly what many Christians do today. If a teaching makes them feel happy or uplifted, they think it must be from God. False doctrine makes many people happy. Conversely true doctrine makes many people upset.

As Christians we should measure what we are taught against the infallible word of God, which is able to make you wise for salvation through faith and Jesus Christ’s. Failure to search the Scriptures for any error may make us vulnerable to false teaching. They are some Christians who have not carefully examined their beliefs and consequently except every new opinion and follow uncritically the guidance of every new teacher. As Christians we must carefully weigh and examine what people tell us.

What Is the Spiritual Gift of Discernment?

The spiritual gift of discernment is the ability to quickly perceive whether such things as people, events, or beliefs are from God or Satan. People with the gift of discernment know that Satan and his demons disguise themselves as holy. They also know that Satan empowers counterfeit miracles to deceive people, and that he empowers false teachers, false prophets, false apostles, and false doctrines.

Discerning of spirits is the supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit to perceive the source of a spiritual manifestation and determine whether it is of God (Acts 10:30-35), of the devil (Acts 16:16-18), of man (Acts 8:18-23), or of the world. It is not mind reading, psychic phenomena, or the ability to criticize and find fault. Discerning of spirits must be done by the power of the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit when something is or is not of God. The gift of discerning of spirits is the supernatural power to detect the realm of the spirits and their activities. It implies the power of spiritual insight – the supernatural revelation of plans and purposes of the enemy and his forces. It is a gift which protects and guards your Christian life.

Discernment in Scripture

Jesus was able to know the presence of Satan (Matt. 4:1-11), see when someone was influenced by Satan (Luke 22:31), and know when someone’s words were influenced by Satan (Matt. 16:23). John (1 John 4:1), Paul (Acts 16:16-18), Peter (Acts 5:1-11), and the disciples (Matt. 10:1) all demonstrated the gift of discernment.

We live in an age in which almost any and every religion / religious opinion of philosophy is tolerated. Not everyone who talks about God come from God. There are a lot of cunning, lying, deceiving teachers loose in the world. God requires us to use our minds to learn to discern between truth and error and to identify deceivers and avoid them.

As long as we are in this world, which belongs to Satan, there will always be false teachers. The question again is, how do we know who’s telling the truth and who is lying to us? We must carefully submit to a new teaching searching the Scriptures for its accuracy in God’s word. We must examine their message and their moral life and character. There are some that have the gift of charisma they can talk anybody into anything. They Can sell ice to the Eskimos. That’s why it’s so easy for us to be deceived and that’s why we have to be on the lookout for false teaching.

I remember reading once that it took five years to train a soldier in the Roman army. As born again Christians we don’t start out matured, we are like infants small and vulnerable. We have a growing process that we have to go through to reach our maturity in Christ. Just like the roman army we have to train to be able to battle the enemy.

If you want to grow spiritually you need to learn discernment. That way no one can lead you in the wrong path. Failure to discern between error and truths will leave us opened for false teaching, and At the risk of staying infants, being tossed back and forth by the waves and blown here and there by every word of doctrine and by the cunning and craftiness of man in a deceitful scheme.

Training is your most important part of an infant’s life. Born again Christians must be taught the word of God and taught how to live their lives according to Christ’s. It is the most important time of a Christian’s life being that he starting out as a new creation in Christ. It’s very important to be able to hear God small still voice when it comes to deciding the direction in his life. We must be where God wants us to be and not where we want to be in order to receive from God.

If you have a train ticket going to New York and the train leaves at 7:00 AM and you arrive at 8:00 Am, there is no way that you would get to New York on that train. The same way with God we must be where he wants us or we will miss out on our blessings.

That’s why it’s so important to be able to discern between gods spirit, the demonic spirit and the human spirit. Discernment enables a person to judge and discern whether one who prophesies or speaks in tongues or performs miracles and does so by the power of the Holy Spirit.

It’s possible for a Christian to come under the influence of a spirit whether from God or the devil; hence it is the function of “the gift of discernment of spirits” to judge whether a given act or repetitions of acts flows from the Holy Spirit, demonic spirit, or the human spirit.

Spirits can be summarized under three headings:

1. The Holy Spirit: which always inclines us to do good.

2. Demonic spirit: which always inclines us to do evil.

3. The human spirit: which may be inclined to do either good or evil, depending upon whether we follows right reason or selfish desires.

If you want to grow spiritually you need to learn discernment. In his letter to the Hebrews the apostle Paul laments the lack of maturity in his readers and advised maturity comes from learning to distinguish (discern) good from evil.

Hebrews 5:12 – 14 (RSV) 12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need some one to teach you again the first principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food; 13for every one who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a child. 14But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their faculties trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.

As Christians the spirit of God will make, our hearts troubled, and we may feel agitated in our spirit when we hear false teaching.

we must be careful about falling into the trap of blaming every evil thought that comes into your mind on an evil spirit. We are really quite good at creating our own problems and the atmosphere that we live in today, through TV, radio, music, etc., is saturated with evil and Sinful concepts. Most of the time the enemies simply lets things follow their natural course.

We need to learn to listen to the Holy Spirit and we need to learn to obey the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will not force you to do anything you don’t want to do. It is only the human spirit, and the spirits of the falling Angels that have a desire to dominate and control you. Satan is always out there waiting to ensnare you in your sins to take away your God given freedom. That’s why so important to learn to hear God’s spirit which is the part of learning to walk in the spirit.

The gift of discernment relates to message, motive, tone or attitude, character and Christian lifestyle. The gift of discernment allows a person to discern between: the one who has something to say and the one who has to say something.

God requires us to use our mind and reason and education in the matter of faith. We must be able to identify deceivers and avoid them. As Christians with the power of the Holy Spirit we should have some insight into the plans and purpose that God has for us. God will give you a vision as to your direction in your Christian walk.
1 Corinthians 2:15 – 16 (RSV) 15The spiritual man judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16“For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Christians must not be naïve about claims of spiritual authority, and gullibly except all such claims. Many Cults and Charismatic leaders have gained popular support often among disenchanted former church members. For There are many wolves in sheep’s clothing who claim authority based on divine revelation or anointing or prophetic mantle to validate their teachings.

It’s a tragedy to have a misguided tolerance towards false and teaching. The Scripture says

Ephesians 5:11 (RSV) 11Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.

The New Corporation

A corporation was started and personnel were sought out from every corner of the world. The corporation was to be for the benefit of all. Everything needed including all benefits needed for abundant living was provided. The benefit that the CEO/Pres. would get would be Fellowship with his people in this corporation.religious-backgrounds-for-powerpoint-presentations.jpg

The vice president chosen was provided with many benefits including living expenses, transportation, and an expense account. Anybody with this opportunity should have been well contented, but that wasn’t enough for this vice president. He wanted to be the big boss the CEO/ president himself.

He knew that he could not do this on his own, so he decided to recruit the ones that he could sway to his way of thinking. It should have been difficult for him to turn people away from the CEO/president because of all the benefits that He provided. Everybody working there had everything they needed for an abundant life.

The vice president was able to get a third of the personnel to follow him, but that wasn’t enough to take over the CEO/presidency position. So he decided to form his own corporation by imitating the original corporation. He would fool his personnel into believing they had security with him, but it was just a front.

Whenever a new recruit would go to the good corporation for a personal interview he would wait until they came out and tried talking to them about going to his corporate. He would paint a great illusion of what could be expected at his corporation. The prideful, rebellious, and self-centered gladly went to his corporation.

God created the heavens and the earth, and he created man in his own image. God wanted Fellowship with his creation. The devil was once one of God’s greatest Angels until he rebelled, because he wanted to be like God. The devil convinces the first created beings Adam and Eve to believe him and turn away from God. Sin came into the world by the deception of Satan.

Whenever a person turns his life to Christ, the devil comes around trying to deceive him into going back into his old lifestyle. The devil would like nothing better than to destroy you before you have a relationship with God.

In the above scenario, the new corporation is heaven and the Imitation Corporation is hell. The new recruits are the believers when they hear the word; it is how they receive it in their hearts whether they choose to stay in heaven or hell. The devil comes to steal the word from your heart. The word must be well planted with many roots in order to withstand the deception of Satan.

Remember Satan’s plans are never original, the only game plan that he has is to imitate God. He does all the opposite of what God calls good.

THE GIFT OF SALVATION

Why would somebody reject a free gift? Maybe because they are skeptical and don’t believe someone would give them something for free. But we all can receive a free gift, the gift of salvation; the free gift of salvation is offered to whosoever believes the righteousness of God which he freely gives to everyone who has faith. GOD’s offers the gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. Salvation is a gift of God. Jesus Christ is the only way to obtain it by grace through faith. It is promise and is available for whosoever.promise and is available for whosoever.

the-gift-of-salvation-through-jesus-christ.png

John 3:16 (NKJV)
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

We are all under the power of sin and death without any righteous of our own. All sin has its consequences. In the words of Paul, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Do you know who the hardest cases are that would reject a free gift? Not thieves, adulterers, murderers, homosexuals, and not even blasphemers. The hardest cases for God to save are the good people who are so self-righteous they will not confess themselves to be sinners in need of a Savior.

This is one of Satan’s greatest lies he says you don’t need salvation, because there is nothing wrong with being a human being, and you don’t deserve eternal punishment just because you were born a human being. Don’t believe the lies of Satan.

How can salvation be received as a free gift? There is only one way to God’s “salvation” and that is through Jesus Christ. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are liars. Jesus is the only way!

Hell is not a party place; it is a place you would not want to be. It is only in heaven where you will be able to talk to your love ones and be with them forever. There are so many people heading to hell’s direction with no thought in their mind of the consequences of hell. We live in a society that pretty much lets you do your own thing if it makes you feel good; and that’s a lie of Satan to keep people from knowing God and having eternal life. It’s hard to understand why someone would want to go to hell, but I guess we were all in that situation once; that we thought life was meant to be lived to its fullest on this earth, and had no time for God.

Heaven is a place of rejoicing; hell is the place of torment. You choose which direction you want to be heading in your life, nobody can force you one way or the other. God loves you and doesn’t wants to see you on the road to destruction, but that’s your choice “oh how it hurts God” when you reject the gift of salvation.

 The Gift of Salvation

If you’re ready to know Jesus for yourself today then please repeat this simple prayer from your heart:

“Lord Jesus, I need you.

I repent from all of my sins

And I now accept the gift of salvation

Jesus, I invite you to take your place as Lord of my life from this moment forward.

Show me you’re Glory and change me today.

In Jesus name I pray.

Amen”

If you receive the gift of salvation this is the beginning of your new life in Christ. You will be branded from your friends and loved ones as an outsider. People don’t want to be around Christians because they feel guilty about their own sinful life, but are reluctant to change their ways. Being a Christian may be a rocky road, but oh how good the end results will be; when we get to see all our loved ones that have gone ahead of us to that eternal life with Jesus.

False Faith

True Faith or False Faith – 301 Blog..jpgWhen God is at work planting saving faith (a genuine response to the Gospel), you can guarantee that the devil is hard at work planting false faith (counterfeit Christianity).  Satan uses his cunning and power to convincing people that they have saving faith when they do not. The parables of Jesus show that we are continually warned against self-deception. For example In Matthew 13.24-30 Jesus tells the parable of the wheat and tares, In Matthew 13.36-43 he explains the meaning to His disciples. There will be tares in the church until the rapture.

How can we tell the counterfeits from the true Christians? This is not always an easy task. I have known church members for years, believing that they were dedicated Christians, only to find out later that they were counterfeits. Just because someone goes to church and carries a bible with them does not mean they are Christians. Remember a counterfeit looks like the real thing, but it’s not.

There are many false teachers today that are counterfeits. The counterfeits do not know or understand the gospel of grace that saves so their teaching is usually man centered. 90% of the teaching in the churches today is about the Christian life and how to live it. This is Satanic because it turns people’s eyes into themselves, and away from God. They want to make you feel good but in reality they’re taking you away from God.

As Christians we need to read the Bible for all its worth, otherwise we are going to be misled. Study Scripture in Context, (out of context is using verses to say what you want them to say).Don’t rip single verses or even portions of verses out of their context. We can make the Bible say almost anything by combining different verses; even verses that sound similar may in context address quite different topics.

There are those willing to have Christ as their Savior, yet who are most reluctant to submit to Him as their Lord, to be at His command, and to be governed by His laws. There are unregenerate Christians who profess Christ as Lord, and do not have a genuine response to the Gospel.

Matthew 7:22-23 ( NKJV )
Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

 2 Corinthian 13:5 (NKJV)
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.?—unless indeed you are disqualified.

Paul here reminds the Corinthians—and us—that it is quite possible for a man or woman to profess Christ and salvation, yet still be unsaved. They may even deceive themselves into thinking that such a profession has saved them. Therefore, we need to examine ourselves, to prove ourselves. The sure proof is the realization that Christ is indwelling us, by the Holy Spirit, resulting in godly lives and glad acceptance of all the revealed Word of God, as inspired by the same Holy Spirit.

Without regeneration it is spiritually impossible to believe in Christ. Except a man be born again, he cannot see, he cannot understand, he cannot come to Christ (John 3:3; 6:37, 44; 1 Cor. 2:14). Regeneration is the renewing of the heart and mind; and the renewed heart and mind must act according to their nature.

Regeneration is the act of God alone. But faith is not the act of God. It is not God who believes in Christ for salvation; it is the sinner. Although it is by God’s grace alone that a person is able to believe, faith is an activity of us alone. In saving faith we receive and rest upon Christ alone for salvation. True, this is a strange, and to some extent, undefinable mixture. But this is precisely what the Bible teaches. This is God’s way of salvation, expressing His supreme wisdom, power, and grace.

Many Christians come to receiving the blessing of God through following the steps to salvation, and once they get to the point of “FAITH” they slack off. The reason is because of unbelief. UNBELIEF is the major reason Christians have “little” faith….

Matthew 6:30 ( NKJV )
Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Unbelief is the opposite of faith, and Unbelief is doubt. Unbelief is believing the wrong thing…usually a miss-understanding of the word of God….Today it is even worse because of the many different bible translations. The old trick from the Devil is to play on words, just like he pulled on Eve in the Garden.

Some translations are paraphrase, which makes them more misleading at times. Difference Translations (Bible)  are good at times to get a better understanding of what we are studing, but we need to check back to the original King James to get the fullness of the gospel.

The gospel is about Jesus Christ, his life, his death, his resurrection, his position at the right hand of God. The gospel calls into question all that we think and as Christians; It is the deciding factor as to who is a real Christian and who is a counterfeit. There is only one gospel and there is only one way to believe and have faith.

The apostle Paul said, “That if we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:6-9. There is no room for any kind of false gospel. We must know beyond a shadow of a doubt how and what the Lord wants us to believe and have faith in, for our very souls depend upon this.

The gospel is a very simple message. Christ has saved us by doing for us that which we are not capable of doing for ourselves because we were dead in trespasses and sins. By his righteous life he has offered everything to the Godhead that the law requires. He did this in our name and on our behalf just like we did it ourselves. When Christ lived, we lived in him

The Christian life is a life of repentance. We are called to turn away from a life of sin and embrace the truth——–Jesus is the truth.

As Christians we need to be aware that there is a lot of deception these days for we are getting close to the return of Christ. The devil is working overtime in preventing Christians from going to heaven.

The need for more vital prayer in our life

Illustration:  Bill Moyers, who had previously studied for the ministry, worked in Lyndon Johnson’s White House. At one meal, he was asked to say grace. He said it so softly that the boisterous President Johnson said, “Speak up Bill, I can’t hear you.” Moyers replied, “Mr. President, I wasn’t speaking to you.”Prayer_by_Bluwi.jpg

If you wanted someone to instruct you in golf or tennis, wouldn’t you choose someone who is good at golf and tennis? The same goes for prayer. If you want a better prayer life, why not go to someone who excelled in the ministry of prayer? Why not go to Jesus? One of the topics Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount was prayer.

In Proverbs 3:5 it says not to lean on your own understanding but to trust God with all your heart.

You should always Trust God with your life, even if it doesn’t make any sense to you.

How can we ask God for the needs in our life when we don’t completely trust God to answer us when we pray? With God it is not a guessing game, for example we may say something like this, “I wonder if God will grant my prayer or not”. We must trust in our hearts and believe that God will answer our prayers. That is what we call faith.

When we live our lives with prayer on the fringe we are really telling God that we don’t trust Him. Often with our lips we declare trust but with our lives we show that we really don’t believe God will always see us through.

Prayer should be addressed to God not man:

Matthew 6:5-6 (NKJV)
“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

This is not a condemnation of public prayer, it is when you pray; you shall not be like the hypocrites in verse five. Jesus prayed publicly. The Lord’s Prayer was a public prayer.

  1. It does mean that we must always remember who we are addressing. Prayer time is not a time to try to impress people, but to communicate with God.

C.    If we talk to be heard by men, they will hear, but God will not.

Prayer is measured by sincerity not multiplication of words:

Matthew 6:7-8 (NKJV)
And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
“Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

  1. It is condemning empty repetition.
  2. It is condemning the notion that the best prayers are the longest prayers.
  3. This is not a condemnation of persistence.

The reason some prayers fail may be because of lack of persistence. Persistence in prayer is that quality which does not stop praying until it receives an answer.

Difficulties, discouragements, obstacles or doubts that come along the way do not stop this kind of prayer. A persistent prayer is never satisfied until you get an answer.

Most of us quit praying after a few days. Persistence is one thing that God looks for in our prayer life. It is persistence in prayer that makes known to God that we are not stopping asking until we get an answer. It is this quality that makes sure that we keep our eyes focused on receiving the answer to our prayers in spite of all distractions.

Persistence wins the heart of God. It is the lack persistence that may keep many of our prayers unanswered. Persistence in prayer can easily be said to be a kind of law of prayer that has been revealed in the Bible. Persistence in prayer is the touchstone of the intensity of our prayers.

If we are persistent in prayer it is a clear indication before God that we are praying to God in real earnest with regard to our need. Such a kind of prayer, God always loves to honor and answer.

Prayer should follow Jesus’ pattern, not our preferences:

Matthew 6:9-13 (NKJV)
In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

 A.    Praise should always come first.

1.    Respect for God’s names.

2.    Commitment to God’s kingdom.

3.    Submission to God’s will.

B.    Petition is important but should always come second.

1.    Petition for the provision of daily needs.

2.    Petition for the pardon of past sins.

3.    Petition for the promise of future guidance.

Prayer should affect our behavior, not just our mood:

Matthew 6:15 (NKJV)
But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

A.    Prayer may make us feel better. While that is welcome, it is not all there is

to our prayer life.

B.    Prayer will affect the way we relate to other people. (Prayer wanting your attitude towards others)

C.    If we have received forgiveness from God, it will be difficult not to extend it to others. Something is seriously wrong if we cannot do this.

While prayer is a natural desire of the human heart, it often seems so unnatural. We should not be afraid to accept instruction. Like the disciples of old we cry out, “Lord, teach us to pray.” He will do that for you. And you will be able to enjoy a lifetime of close communication and fellowship with God.

All of us long to connect with someone who can identify with our circumstances and share in our day-to-day life. Prayer is just that, a personal experience and intimate connection with our Heavenly Father
